Melbourne mindfulness festival with a twist makes waves amongst Millennials
In response to the current deleterious effects of social media amongst the youth population, millennial well-being advocates Iman Hamaama Sellami, Molly Blythe, Candice Kerr and Bonnie Toogood will be launching JOMO ‘Arts & Lifestyle’ Festival to promote the ‘Joy Of Missing Out’ from social media.

This event will be inaugurated on Sunday June 7 2020 in the City of Melbourne and will be ongoing for a period of 1 month. The festival will foster an effort to combat the onslaught of mental health or ‘the blues’ amongst the Melbourne youth population prompted by excessive social networking and the ‘Fear of Missing Out’ or ‘FOMO’.

According to the Australian mental health organisation Beyond Blue, one in seven young Australians experience a mental health condition such as anxiety or depression, which is exacerbated by overexposure to social media.

The JOMO ‘Arts and Lifestyle’ Festival is a celebration of youth culture and well being, making it one of the first festivals deliberately targeting Melbourne’s youth population. There will be an assemblage of local headlining music acts, artisan food and drink stalls, plant merchants and yoga classes, as a national promotion of youth mental well-being.

The festival will be collaborating with the esteemed author Christina Crook, who wrote multiple best-selling books on her brainchild JOMO also referred to as the “emotionally intelligent antidote to FOMO”, in an effort to get people to disconnect, regain balance and control over their lives. Crook will be an attendee at the festival, provide genuine advice and promote her mindful outlook on life.

The JOMO ‘Arts and Lifestyle’ Festival will be collaborating with the Nation’s leading youth mental health advocate: ‘Headspace’ and will be working with technology innovator: Yondr, that enables “phone-free” environments at events inclusive of festivals and concerts.
This collaboration will serve to promote an abundance of altered mindsets in-terms of social media utility whilst enabling the formation of a balanced relationship between virtual and physical realities. Further providing youth groups with an opportunity to engage with the people, places, environments and experiences that ground them together.

The four well-being advocates based in Melbourne, Australia have dedicated their time and focus on assisting others experience the wonders and potentials of the lived experience; and the joy rather than the fear of missing out. Through both the JOMO ‘Arts and Lifestyle’ Festival and youth engagement programs, they are endeavouring to adjust current mindsets whilst encouraging individuals to make the conscious choice of physically connecting with others and their external environment by disconnecting from technology.
